Kris Humphries had a suspicion his celebrity wife Kim Kardashian could be bailing on their marriage, but has told NBA friends he was “blindsided” by Monday’s divorce filing and learned of the news through a TMZ report like the rest of the world.

The couple’s recent issues played out in the tabloid world and culminated with Kardashian filing for divorce after 72 days of marriage.

“I love my wife and am devastated to learn she filed for divorce,” Humphries said in a statement later Monday.

Humphries, a free-agent forward who played for the New Jersey Nets a season ago, married Kardashian in a lavish, made-for-reality-TV wedding on Aug. 20 in California. As the Nets planned to move into a brand new Brooklyn arena for the 2012-13 season, his relationship with Kardashian appealed to the franchise’s business and marketing side.

Kardashian lent some sort of celebrity status to the franchise’s courtside seats, but that was never going to influence the Nets’ basketball officials on how they worked to re-sign him. Nets management does have interest in bringing back Humphries, but purely based on his market value for rebounding and defense.

TMZ reported that Kardashian filed for divorce on Monday morning, citing “irreconcilable differences.”

In his statement, Humphries sounded like he isn’t ready for the marriage to end.

“I’m committed to this marriage and everything this covenant represents,” he said, “and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make it work.”

Kim Kardashian’s friends are scoffing at Kris Humphries, claiming he’s full of BS when he says he wanted to have a simple life with her in Minnesota, because once the marriage fell apart, he immediately began “chasing fame.”

They’re saying in the last week or so, when they started talking about the possibility of divorce, Kris went into full Hollywood gear, talking about “branding” the Kris Humphries name with cologne, nightclub appearances and what not.

And we’re told Kris was pushing to keep their connection going, even if they ended their marriage … and that threw up red flags.

We’re told Kim was especially put off that Kris hired a Hollywood publicist over the weekend to work on his image.

As we previously reported, one of the main reasons for the divorce was that Kris wanted Kim to move to Minnesota, but once it became clear she wasn’t leaving Hollywood and the marriage was over, Kris was all about the very things he despised.

Who didn’t see that one coming? We knew it wasn’t going to last long, but 72 days is just amazing. Kim Kardashian filed on Monday to end her 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries.

The couple will pay their own court fees and attorneys. Kamp Kardashian has hired Hollywood super-lawyer Laura Wasser to represent the 31-year-old soon-to-be divorcee.

Property rights will be determined in accordance with the couple’s prenuptial agreement. This is what Kardashian intends to keep out of Humphries’ hands: her jewelry and “personal effects”; all the money she made before, during and after the marriage; everything else the doomed duo pre-divided up in their prenup.

The court won’t decide spousal support. So, basically, whatever Humphries gets from the divorce — and how much — is not for a judge to decide. It’s likely spelled out in the prenup, which if sources are correct, protects both parties from each other: Chiefly, Kris from Kim’s not-always-fantastic business decisions; Kim’s $35 million net worth against Kris’ comparatively paltry $8-to-$16 million.

“Because it’s such a short turnaround time and it’s two days of travel, it’s really expensive to fly out all of our crews to come with us,” the 27-year-old explains from New York.

For the reality star, whose life has been documented by film crews for the past four years, it will be a welcome respite.

Having shot to fame in 2007 with the launch of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Khloe and her family have become media juggernauts.

Khloe has 4.5 million followers on Twitter, her own spin-off show, Khloe and Lamar, and appears in gossip magazines as often, if not more than, Hollywood heavyweights like Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez, under headlines such as “Tortured for her weight” and “The truth about my marriage”. But, unlike other A-listers, Khloe is happy to talk marriage, babies and weight.

“I am someone whose weight fluctuates; I go up and I go down and that’s why I like to invest in pieces like handbags and shoes and things that aren’t affected by that,” she admits.

That’s why she’s so excited about her reason for visiting Sydney with Kim for the official launch of the Kardashian Kollection handbag line – a 67-piece range created with their sister Kourtney – at a VIP bag-signing event on November 3.

“We all designed them, but there’s definitely items that you can tell are more Kim, or more of a Kourtney or a Khloe,” she says.

“But we all have to agree on the pieces and what is produced and we all have to fall in love with them.”

A fan of Australian labels such as sass & bide and Bec & Bridge, the visiting sisters will be looking for new local labels to stock at D-A-S-H, the family’s chain of three clothing stores.

“We do love Australian designers,” Khloe says.

According to Now magazine, the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star already finds her new hubby “annoying” – with the publication reporting they are “fighting like cat and dog.”

A pal of Kimmy’s told Now: “The trouble is that Kim’s very bossy and a control freak. She treats Kris like a lapdog. She’s already complaining about all the little things he does that annoy her – like the fact he snorts when laughs.”

They continued: “Kim and Kris got married in a hurry. They only went public back in February so they don’t really know each other. Sure, the sex is great and Kim can’t stop talking about how Kris is being very adventurous in bed.”

The source then explained that Humphries is also feeling outnumbered by the socialite’s family: “Kris is now feeling henpecked and it’s starting to dawn on him that it isn’t simply a case of landing himself a hot wife.”

They added: “He’s married into the Kardashian brand and the whole family is part of the package. It’s driving him nuts.”

Kim has also made no secret of her desire to fall pregnant at the same time as her younger sister, Khloe, with her pal stating to Now that a baby is the last thing on Kris’ mind at the moment.
